Star function can be used for both e-mails and folders.
You can star individual e-mails and find them within your starred e-mails section as follows:
Once you star it, it appears within your star mail folder:
You can also star a folder:
And it appears within your starred folder list:
You can also unstar the folders when you don't need them much around:
